Today we are pleased to spotlight Mark, an HGV driver from our Newport depot as our latest Health and Safety Champion. We talked to Mark about how he keeps himself and his colleagues safe at work and about his favourite parts of his job here at Flannery.
What is your favourite breakfast?
I prefer to start my day with a bacon butty filled with brown sauce, can’t be anything else right?! I absolutely love it!
What do you enjoy about your job?
I really enjoy travelling to different places all the time and meeting lots of new people.
What is a typical challenge for you at work?
The most common challenge I come across is a traffic jam when I deliver plant and equipment from site to the yard and back, especially during the morning rush hours.
What kind of hobbies and interests do you have outside of work?
I like to spend time outdoors, so on the weekends I enjoy going on downhill mountain biking. It’s very energising and exciting.
What do you do to keep yourself and others safe at work?
A lot of stuff!
When on site or on the yard it is really important to be very attentive when tracking machines. Be aware of people and always check what is going on around you to make sure people are not too close and everybody is safe, especially when I am loading/unloading plant.
I always check for overhead cables or power lines and that the load capacity of the chains is within limits to make sure the load is held securely. Before moving off I clear my dash and I always wear the correct PPE to keep myself safe.
Why is safety important to you?
Simple but important: everyone gets to go home at the end of the day.
