We’ve come a long way since 1972…

We’re nothing but proud to have grown our business from one machine (a JCB 3C Excavator) in 1972 to upwards of 5200 units in 2023. We now partner with world-leading manufacturers including Cat, Komatsu, JCB, Volvo, Bomag and Wacker Neuson.

From our original base next to the Oval cricket ground, we now operate from a network of nine depots in Aberdeen, Northumberland, Dublin, Manchester, Birmingham, Bicester, Newport, Leighton Buzzard and, of course, our purpose-built Head Office depot next to Wembley Stadium. Starting with Patrick Flannery Senior over 50 years ago, we now have more than 2200 operators supporting our clients on projects nationwide.

However, what we’re most proud of is that we’re still, at our core, a family business with strong values at its heart.

That’s what has made us resilient, and will stand us in good stead for the next 50 years. Without doubt, what has kept us relevant over the years is our firm belief in and commitment to:

• People
• Safety
• Innovation and Sustainability
• Value

People stand at the centre of the Flannery proposition, providing excellence in service, plant standards and safety. By listening to our clients’ specific requirements, keeping abreast of the latest legislation and maintaining a relentless level of investment, we truly have an unrivalled record of delivering quality and value.

As our respected manufacturers continue to develop technology, Flannery continues to innovate. Specifically with Digital Machine Solutions, finding ways to turn data into meaningful analysis and allowing customers to make hire decisions that deliver the most effective and reliable solution for them.

We’ve got so much to celebrate…

… and we intend to take every opportunity this year to do just that. We have numerous events planned, from a big party to say thank you to all our staff, to a formal event for our partners in the construction industry.

But we also want to take this year as an opportunity to focus on how we can be constructive about the future.

Over the last 15 years our frequent partnerships and collaborations with leading construction companies have seen us develop our digital machine solutions offering in line with the demands of the industry we serve, and we now have unrivalled expertise in the field.

Training people today to create tomorrow’s workforce

Educating the industry so that the benefits of digital machine control can be made a reality on every construction site is a now a core part of our business. We’ve consistently trained and upskilled our team of operators to ensure competency, and our training team can provide training modules both on-machine and using plant simulators.

In addition, we have a Digital Construction Training School at our Birmingham depot. This state-of-the-art facility includes a number of simulators configured with machine guidance and digital control technology, and a field-based training area that holds a fleet of machine guidance and digital control connected machinery.

When it comes to digital machine solutions we can safely say we’re ready – now!

Part of our mission to confidently provide intelligent machinery nationwide and educate the plant hire workforce to improve project efficiency, safety and sustainability has been our ongoing collaboration with MachineMax.

This overarching data-driven system empowers plant managers with accurate real-time information, enabling them to evaluate the machine mix on-site and judge whether a fleet is working at optimum capacity. In addition to this, the data can provide excellent information on operator performance, identifying training opportunities and driving positive behavioural change on-site.

We’re not intending to rest on our laurels either.

The construction industry is changing rapidly, increasingly focusing on sustainability, carbon reduction, safety and productivity. Each year we will continue to invest in developing our services and plant to meet their needs. Who knows what life will look like in 50 years’ time – but if there is still a need for plant hire machinery and technology, we want to be there… right at the forefront.

Looking forward – Giving back
The Flannery Fundraising Initiative

Our 50th year celebrations compound the importance to us of having strong values. What better way than giving back to make those values a reality?

From offering rainbow diggers for Children in Need projects to sponsoring individuals looking for financial support, we have always been committed to helping where we can.

We plan to make more of our community focus in our 50th year by creating a dedicated Flannery Fundraising Initiative committee whose sole purpose will be distributing a fund of money and seeking volunteers to help causes across the UK.

We’re excited to find out exactly what this team will be able to achieve and see the creative ways they’ll use their budget!
