At Flannery Plant Hire we are committed to our social responsibility, a major focus of this is how to drive sustainability in construction.

We achieve this by being very forward thinking and the first to initiate new technologies and initiatives; we are always reviewing new technology and innovations to see how they can help us to create greener solutions for clients. It is also important for us to have clear objectives for the future and be proactive is finding solutions that will help us reach our ambitious targets.

Environmental brochure

Our new environmental brochure which outlines our approach, the value we can deliver for our customers and the investments we are making in our fleet. All of which support efficiencies in fuel savings, reduction in emissions and increases in productivity. We strongly believe it is our social responsibility to invest in the latest innovations, that drive a green agenda.

First ten Stage IIIB HYBRID Excavators

In 2012 Flannery invested in the first ten Stage IIIB final hybrid excavators. These machines had a unique hybrid system, the electric swing motor/generator captured and regenerated energy as the upper structure slowed down, converting it into electric energy. The regenerated energy could then be stored in the ultra-capacitor and used by the generator/motor to assist the engine when it needed to accelerate.

Flannery joins the Supply Chain Sustainability School

The Supply Chain Sustainability School is an award winning industry wide collaboration, led by Partners and Members. The School is for everybody working in the Construction, FM, Homes and Infrastructure sectors and is focused on a variety of topics from Waste & Carbon, Fairness Inclusion and Respect, The Modern Slavery Act as well as many more sustainability issues. Flannery Plant Hire plays a proactive role within the school, working closely with the plant and people groups.

Flannery Launch First Consolidated Telematics Dashboard

In 2018 Flannery Plant Hire launched its first telematics dashboard for clients. This consolidated data across the hire fleet (from multiple OEMs). The initial trial project showed 9% increase in utilisation and a £34k saving in fuel in the first 10-weeks of use.

Electric Vehicle Charging Points

In 2018 Flannery Plant Hire installed electric vehicle charging points at all depots. During this period a big investment was also made in the wider company vehicle fleet to get it to be 47% hybrid.

The first Stage IV Hybrid Excavators Arrive

In September 2018 Flannery became the first investor in latest Komatsu hybrid excavator, the HB215C-3. Harnessing the same unique regeneration technology as the first hybrid excavator that Flannery invested in in 2012. The first client to benefit from this innovative technology was the A14 Cambridge to Huntingdon Integrated Delivery Team, you can see how it performed in the video and case study available in the resource section.

Electronic Time Sheet Trial

In early 2019 Flannery Plant Hire began the transition to electronic time sheets. This initiative proved that there are many efficiencies to be gained, not just a reduction in paper!

The Next Phase of Electric Vehicle

In 2019 Flannery Plant Hire placed an order for the first all-electric HGV truck from Tesla, we are sure we got in pretty early because our order number is O/N003. The truck is due to join the fleet late in 2020.

Production Management Focuses Investment

Throughout 2019 over £30million was invested the latest technology with a focus on production management. This included the latest CAT technology weighing system that improves fleet productivity and reduces operating costs. It uses external lights or an optional digital display to signal the loader that the proper load has been reached.

ECO Operator Training Module Launched

In 2019 the Flannery training department launched an ECO Operator Training Module. The module focuses on the core operator behaviours which have a direct impact on environmental factors. Idle time on launch project has reduced from 43% to 31% (of total engine hours).

The World's First Hydrostatic Dozer Joins the Fleet

Late in 2019 Flannery became the UK launch customer for the world’s first hydrostatic drive dozer. Delivering an impressive 22.9% fuel saving in comparison to a standard dozer on its first project, the M4 Smart Motorway. HGV Fleet 100% Compliant with EURO 6 Code

Investment in the Flannery HGV fleet in 2019 means that it is compliant to EURO 6 code. The new fleet of Flannery HGVs have achieved a fuel consumption reduction, increasing the MPG by 2.2miles per gallon (34% improvement in 18month period). They are also all fitted with auto-idle function which showed an 8% reduction in fuel usage (when compared to HGV vehicles not fitted with auto-idle).

First Signatory to Sustainability School Plant Charter

In May 2020 Flannery Plant Hire were proud to be the first signatory to the Plant Group Commitment Charter. This charter, which Flannery played an active part in creating promotes a common set of forward-looking and challenging sustainability performance standards to be used when purchasing or hiring plant and equipment to reduce impacts from construction sites across the UK.

Setting out Sustainable Ambitions

As part of our Sustainability Plan Flannery Plant Hire are setting a number of targets. The first one of these looks ahead to 2022 when we will be running more than 80% of our car fleet on electric/hybrid technology.
