At this point in the year the Flannery Training Department and wider business would normally be busy preparing for a busy few months of engagement activities with schools and colleges. From job fairs to career sessions in schools and colleges the spring and summer months are a great opportunity for us to promote construction as a positive career path across the country.

Understandably, due to the current covid-19 situation, this has not been possible. Undeterred though, Flannery Plant Hire is committed to continuing to support school and college leavers during these difficult times. The team are very pleased to launch our new Virtual Bitesize Construction Careers events. Supported by the CITB, major transport infrastructure clients, colleges and tier 1 contractors, the events are proving to be a huge success nationally.

This week we have been joined by HS2 (High Speed Two) Ltd and EKFB, who showcased the huge opportunities available on the HS2 project. The project needs to attract 2000 apprentices and 30000 construction workers to build the high speed railway. The session is a great opportunity to highlight the demand for skills in the sector and the real job opportunities available. Click Here to view their recent post.

The events attract students from a range of college courses, including those on bricklaying, electrical and multi-trade programmes. The live webinar includes a live feed to site where a Flannery apprentice offers a virtual tour of their machine and site.

Oonagh McPhillips Head of Construction at West London College commented, “The WLC was delighted to host this, the first, virtual careers event. Well designed, the balance of interactivity, presentation and media clips was just right. The real-time presentation from the apprentice was particularly powerful and engaging, as was the combination of contribution from Flannery Plant and the CITB. Overall the event was extremely well received by our learners. Thank you Flannery Plant & CITB!”

Feedback and interaction from the students has been fantastic. Paul Atkins of Bucks College Group commented, “Another professional presentation, blooming brilliant! The students especially enjoyed seeing your apprentice in her dump truck – very inspiring for all”.

Sophie Francis, Training Manager from Flannery Plant Hire explained, “We are very aware that there will be a lot of students pondering their next career steps whilst they are at home. With this in mind, our Virtual Bitesize Construction Careers events are a way to continue to engage these individuals in order to secure the future pipeline of talent for our industry.”

Flannery have a schedule of virtual events with a number of local colleges throughout the country. Our next step will be to widen our audience, by promoting these webinars to members of the public to learn about what construction has to offer – this in turn has the opportunity to widen our talent pool even further.

If you know someone who would be interested in attending they can register for information on our next open session by clicking here.
