Why did you choose the Land-Based Service Engineer Apprenticeship?
After school, I did not want to continue in full-time education, so I had to start considering my career options. A lot of my family work within the construction industry, so joining a construction related apprenticeship felt like a natural fit. When I heard about the Flannery apprenticeship programme for plant fitters, I jumped at the chance!
How does the apprenticeship compare to school? It is very different. The apprenticeship is great for people who are more practical-minded and like to get stuck in. It is hands-on, and the goal is always to get the job done as safely as possible.
What do you enjoy most about the apprenticeship?
You get to do things that interest you. Some tasks are more exciting than others, but because I have chosen to be here, I enjoy it. Plus, you are surrounded by a great group of people who make you feel like you belong.
How do you feel about earning money while learning?
Many of my friends are still in full-time college, but I love that I am developing my skills and earning at the same time. It is the best of both worlds.
What is the team dynamic at the depot like? It is a huge team effort. Everyone has been in my position before, so they understand what it is like and want to support you. The experienced fitters are really helpful, and I get paired with different people each day. All my work is completed under supervision.
Can you walk us through a typical day? Every morning, we start with a briefing that sets out our tasks for the day. We get a list of machines that need pre-delivery inspections (PDIs), and I will be paired with an experienced fitter to complete the work. Our tasks can include PDIs, scheduled servicing, and minor repairs. Even as a first-year apprentice, we get trained on some really in-depth tasks.
What are your long-term career goals? Long-term, I want to be a road fitter, traveling and showcasing my skills. I am still young, so I have time to take opportunities as they come, but I have a clear goal in mind.
What would you say to someone considering an apprenticeship? Embrace the opportunity! You are being paid to learn and develop your skills while becoming the best version of yourself. Anyone can join, but you need the right mindset, be determined and have a goal in mind.
Have there been any challenges? It is hard work. Coming straight from school was a bit of an adjustment, but it is worth it. Being surrounded by skilled and passionate people every day motivates me to keep improving my own skills and mindset.
How do you feel about your apprenticeship journey so far?
I am really proud of myself and happy with where I am heading. Waking up every morning knowing I have something to work towards is a great feeling.
