Why did you join the apprenticeship? After leaving school, I wanted to earn money while developing my skills. Full-time education was never an option I considered. I always knew an apprenticeship was the right path for me.
Did you face any challenges when you joined the apprenticeship? When I first started as an apprentice, I was a bit nervous. I was worried that everyone would expect me to know what I was doing. But that was not the case at all. The team at the Newport depot are incredibly supportive, guiding me every step of the way. If I ever get stuck, someone is always there to help.
Do you enjoy going to college as part of your apprenticeship? I attend Bridgend College in set blocks throughout the year. The tutors and facilities are excellent. I enjoy college because it allows me to practice advanced tasks in a controlled environment before applying them at the depot. This hands-on approach boosts my confidence and helps with my learning and skills development.
What is the best part of being an apprentice? There is nothing better than coming to work, learning your trade and being paid to do it!
What type of tasks do you complete on a daily basis? My role is highly varied. Each day, I could be performing Pre-Delivery Inspections (PDIs), repairs, or servicing machines. I have also been upskilled in welding, which has been a great addition to my work. I love that every day is different. I work on different tasks, on machines of all sizes, which keeps the job exciting and engaging.
What is your favourite task in the depot? I love diagnosing faults. It is rewarding to identify an issue, figure it out, and successfully repair the machine. It gives me a real sense of achievement.
What support do you get in the depot? We receive plenty of support from the experienced fitters in the workshop. The business has a strong structure, ensuring apprentices always have guidance when needed. We also have our Apprentice Mentor, Paul Beard, who visits regularly to keep us on track, ensure we understand our work, and provide support at every opportunity.
How does it feel being in your final year as an apprentice? I am proud of how far I have come. I am in my fourth year now and I will be fully qualified very soon. I feel a real sense of achievement. I have worked hard to get here, and I am determined to keep building on my success.
What would you say to someone considering an apprenticeship? I would 100% recommend an apprenticeship. No matter your age, experience, or background, it provides a structured path into the construction industry with great rewards. If you work hard, stay focused, and put in the effort, success will follow. It is a decision you will not regret.
