Why did you change careers? I used to work in groundworks, but it became repetitive, and I started to lose my passion. I wanted something more skills-based that would challenge me and keep my mind engaged. My mental health took a hit because I was not enjoying my job anymore, so I knew I needed a change.
How did you feel about starting an apprenticeship at 34? At first, I thought I was too old for an apprenticeship. But I quickly realised that apprenticeships are for all ages and backgrounds. Anyone can get into it.
Did you face any challenges when you joined the apprenticeship? My main concern at the start was the salary. I knew I would take a pay cut, but it is only temporary. The reduction is not significant. I can still run a household and support my family. Sometimes, short-term sacrifices are necessary for long-term success.
How has the support been during your apprenticeship? I have had great support from both Reaseheath College and Flannery Plant Hire. It has been a long time since I was in school, and I sometimes struggle with reading and writing, but they have helped me every step of the way.
What do you like about the structure of the programme? I always know what I am doing at any given time. The programme is well-structured, with support from skills coaches at the college and my mentor, Paul Beard, at Flannery. Paul makes sure we are on track and getting the support we need, both at college and in the depot.
What is the best part of your day? Everything I do is new to me, which makes every day a challenge. It keeps my brain working and helps build my confidence as I communicate with different people all day. It has really helped me come out of my shell.
What is the workplace environment like? It is a great working environment. I can ask anyone for help, and nothing is too much trouble. Paul is big on equality and ensures everyone is treated fairly. He also checks in on us personally, which makes a huge difference.
Do you shadow experienced fitters? I work with experienced fitters who teach me new things throughout the day. They always go at my pace and make sure I fully understand each task. If I am ever unsure, there is always someone available to help. The knowledge and experience available at the depot and college is incredible. Everyone wants to pass it down to the next generation.
Would you recommend the Land-Based Service Engineer Apprenticeship to others seeking a career change?Absolutely! It is never too late to make a change. If you are unhappy in your current career, an apprenticeship can be a great way to start fresh. It is hard work, but the rewards are worth it.
Where do you see yourself in five years? I want to be climbing the ladder and reaching the top. There is no other choice for me. I am determined to succeed.
