Today we meet Apprentice Plant Operator, Michael Phillips.
What has been your favourite machine at the college and why?
Definitely the Bergmann articulated dump truck.
What did you do prior to joining the programme and why did you choose to take this career change?
I served 4 years in the Royal Navy. I chose this career as I believe there will always be work available within the plant/construction industry.
What are your aspirations for the future? E.g. machine type, type of project, development within Flannery?
To turn all my tickets from red to blue and to complete the NVQ as well.
What job are you currently working on and what type of work are you doing?
I am currently working on a flood defence project for Bam Nuttall in Radcliffe. Just working with the different types of plant on site, transporting the different types of spoil required.
What has been your most exciting placement and why?
I’ve been on the same placement since I started working on site, but it’s been going very well and the team I’ve been working with are spot on.
Why did you choose Flannery as your apprentice employer?
I knew other people who had done the apprenticeship scheme and it seemed like a good opportunity to progress within a career.
