Each month we highlight our employees and lift the lid on our industry to show why (in our opinion!) the Flannery team is the best and hopefully inspire more people to join our industry.
We are proud to say that our people aren’t just here to do a job, they are a team that is committed to making the industry safer and deliver excellence for our clients. The diverse and highly experienced transport team are no different, safely and efficiently delivering plant whenever and wherever it is needed.
Today we shine a light on Leon, one of our HGV drivers, who is not just an excellent HGV driver but is also a Karate World Champion… To find out more about his extraordinary achievements and everyday work at Flannery, we popped in to ask him a few questions.
Random fact about yourself that would surprise us.
I am a three times Karate World Champion, fought for team GB in judo and was a semi-professional footballer.
These are such amazing achievements in sport! How did you join the construction industry?
In the past, I worked in wholesale delivery. But I liked the idea of pulling big loads and not doing shop deliveries. So, I decided to join the construction industry, which keeps you on your toes and is never monotonous or boring.
I have now been in the construction and plant hire industry for twelve years, and with Flannery for four and a half years already and I never had to drop my sports passion. So, I still teach Karate to this day. I love both sports and plant and I find that my sports activities give me a range of transferrable skills that help in my work, such as patience and endurance.
What is your favourite music you are listening to while on the road?
With music, it depends on the day and the mood I’m in. I’m Jamaican so I listen to a lot of reggae /vocal mixes, I listen to RNB, hip hop, afro beats, UK rap.
What is your favourite breakfast?
I need to try to keep a balanced diet as I’m always on the road and it is easy to snack on the wrong foods. For breakfast, I have three boiled eggs, one banana, peppermint tea and a fruit smoothie.
Describe Flannery in 3 words:
Fun, busy, professional.
What do you like the most about working at Flannery?
What I like about Flannery is they have the best of lorries, trailers and equipment to deliver collect or exchange. It is a great laugh with everyone and unlike some companies, we always see the bosses and they always say hello and talk and acknowledge you. They are always on the front line not afraid to get their hands messy to help operations run smoothly. This means a lot to me and my colleagues.
