We at Flannery are very excited about National Apprenticeship Week 2021.
To kick the week off our Skills Development Director, Paul Skitt has written an “Apprenticeship Blog’’ to discuss what the construction sector has to offer and why Flannery is a great choice for anyone interested in an apprenticeship in plant hire.
“Here at Flannery, National Apprenticeship Week is always an important week in the calendar for us. It’s our opportunity to celebrate apprentices and tell the world how great apprentices are for business and how they help individual’s careers!
Flannery has been taking on apprentices for over 10 years and they have contributed to the growth of the business and helped to inspire the next generation and introduce them to the plant hire industry. There is a real shortage of plant operators in the UK and we are keen to attract new talent into this industry. As a business, we are determined to take a proactive approach, engaging with new entrants and demonstrating the variety of opportunities available.
This year we aim to take 30 apprentices and expect to increase this number over the coming years to help support the business and support the delivery of the UK’s largest infrastructure projects like HS2 and Highways England’s investment programme.
Flannery has been instrumental in developing construction/plant apprenticeship pathways for the industry. Patrick Flannery, our Managing Director, Chaired the employer Trailblazer group that developed the new Construction Plant Operative standard, which was approved for delivery by the Institute for Technology and Technical Education (IFATE) in September 2020.
Flannery is also extremely proud to be one of the first employers in the UK to be employing new apprentices through the new apprenticeship trailblazer and supporting the delivery of it at our fantastic new training centre, the Operator Skills Hub, in the West Midlands, we hope this to be the first of many apprentices going through our skills hub. See what the Operator Skills Hub is all about here
Flannery is engaging with many stakeholders and students, up and down the country, as part of NAW to talk about apprenticeship careers and opportunities in plant hire. As many young people have limited knowledge about the plant sector and our mission is to ensure they will learn more about the fantastic career opportunities in our industry.

In recent years, our apprentices have won awards and have worked on major projects and we hope to expand this further over the coming years and continue our apprenticeship leadership role in the industry. We are very proud of our apprentices we have taken on so far and we look forward to finding new talent in 2021!”
