Meet the new Health and Safety Champion!

Today we would like to spotlight Robert, the Workshop Foreman from our Newport depot as our new Health and Safety Champion, who is helping to support a great safety-first culture through his everyday work.

We asked Robert about the importance of a safety-first approach and how he applies it in his work.

What does a typical day involve?

Repairing machines and making sure that I and my staff are safe at all times. Likewise, I ensure that my workshop is clean and tidy to avoid any hazards such as scars, oil, or grease on the floor. A tidy workspace is a safer workspace.

What is your favourite thing about your job?

Repairing machines that were broken and seeing the result of my work, it’s fab!

What do you do to keep yourself and others safe at work?

Before we start our work in the morning, I have a talk with my team. I ensure that they are made aware of the necessity to follow all safety precautions before they start to work. I need to be sure that there are no trip or fall hazards. Also, I ensure that the health and safety measures are followed by the staff at the workshops and on the yard itself.

My job is to make sure that nobody gets injured, and that they all go home healthy and sound at the end of the day.

Why is safety important to you?

It is truly important to me personally, to make sure I go home to my family at the end of the day and that everybody around me is safe and can return to their families each and every day.
